Personalization of cancer vaccines

One of the most promising developments in April has been the development of cancer vaccines using messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, powered by artificial intelligence. Following the success of this technology in COVID-19 vaccines, companies such as BioNTech and Moderna, in collaboration with healthcare systems such as the British NHS, are working to create personalized vaccines that can fight different types of cancer by adapting to the specific genetic mutations of each tumor.

AI makes it possible to analyze thousands of genomic data in a matter of minutes to identify each patient’s unique “neoantigens”. With this information, a vaccine is generated that trains the immune system to detect and eliminate cancer cells, thus reducing the chances of relapse. Clinical trials are already underway in Spain.

In addition, research centers such as the Institute for Biomedical Research and Innovation of Cadiz have started to use generative AI to automate the analysis of cell samples. This makes it possible to detect early signs of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Rise of small models

In April, a more efficient alternative has gained traction: Small Language Models (SLMs).

These models are designed to run locally on personal devices such as cell phones without the need to rely on cloud data centers. Although their capacity is more limited, they can perform common tasks such as text generation, summarization, translation or basic assistance with much lower power consumption.

This development opens the door to more inclusive, accessible and sustainable artificial intelligence, especially in regions with less technological infrastructure.

Revolution in meteorology

Another notable development of the month is the launch of Aardvark, a new AI-based weather forecasting system developed by the University of Cambridge in collaboration with Microsoft Research, the Alan Turing Institute and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.

Deep learning is used to analyze more than 80 years of physical weather data. Unlike traditional models, which require millions of data and high computational resources, this system can generate accurate predictions using only 10% of the data, which reduces operating costs significantly.

It also enables specific predictions such as weather forecasts tailored to industries such as agriculture, energy or aviation. This capability has enormous potential for natural disaster management.

AI Action Summit

The Action Summit on Artificial Intelligence, an event promoted by UNESCO and the French government, was held in Paris, bringing together representatives from 58 countries to discuss the ethical, inclusive and sustainable future of this technology.

One of the main outcomes was the signing of the Declaration on Inclusive and Sustainable Artificial Intelligence for People and Planet, in which they commit to ensure equitable access to AI, promote the transparency of algorithms and minimize the risks associated with its use, especially in sensitive contexts such as military or political.

There were important absences at this event, such as those of the United States and the United Kingdom, which generated a great deal of controversy. These countries expressed their disagreement with multilateral agreements and are seeking a more focused approach to public-private cooperation and national security.
